The wines of Lazio boast a very ancient history, dating back to the times of the Etruscans and then the Ancient Romans. Culture and tradition make this region of central Italy one of the most historically important areas for the birth and development of viticulture on the peninsula, which remains an important production area today.
One of the region's unique features is its wide variety of soils, microclimates, and grape varieties, which allow for a highly diverse production. Although it is primarily known for its white wines, Lazio also produces some interesting reds. In terms of grape varieties, its terroirs have proven well-suited to hosting not only the historic native varieties, now present for centuries, but also international appellations introduced more recently, which have demonstrated excellent adaptation to the soil and climate conditions of many parts of the region.
