Pallagrello bianco, 'u pallarell', is an ancient vine whose origin presumably dates back to ancient Greece. It was a wine much appreciated by Ferdinand IV of Bourbon who reserved a place for it in his Vigna del Ventaglio, preferring it to the wines of Vesuvius: it became the King's wine. It is said that he liked this wine so much that he forbade it to pass through a vineyard located at Ponticello in the town of Piedimonte Matese where he had this vine planted. Pallagrello is very widespread in the province of Caserta and mainly in the areas of Caiazzo, Castel Campagnano and Castel di Sasso.
